If you live outside of Nevada, or one of the other select states that allow gambling, the chances are very good that the legality of your betting maybe in question. Even if you are using an online sportsbook betting site to bet on a sporting event, the legality of your sports betting maybe is in question.
An American pastime that has been occurring for almost a century. It is a regular way of life. All you have to do is pick up your phone and calling your bookmaker to bet the weekend football games is completely illegal. There are a lot of arguments that it should not be, but that does not change the fact that it is.
In a lot of states, illegal gambling, which is defined as "the making, receipt or placing, of any bet of making money or other value, made in swap for a chance at a stake, to win a prize, or other things of value dependant on a contest, game, or any event which the outcome is a matter of luck," is a third degree misdemeanor. The penalty varies from state to state, but on average you can face up to sixty days in jail and a fine of up to five hundred dollars.
Also most think that they only go after the bookies themselves, but you are wrong. When law enforcement goes after a bookie ring, they will grab all the players as they can as well. Obviously, their main objectives are the bookies themselves. However, law enforcement are not going to allow people who are breaking the law to just "walk away" from it. Do not forget that they know what you are doing is illegal.
If you want to gamble on a sports event and you do not live in a state that allows this? You could visit a casino in a state that allows it. This requires travel time to and from the state. Another way is to call someone you know who can place the bet for you. Nevertheless, again, this is a risky endeavor, because there is no protection for you if you do not get your winnings. The ticket is not even in your name.
Another way is to place wages online, although there is question if this is legal or not. There are many places where you can place a bet online. Many sites say they freely accept United States players and encourage people to bet there but it is not legal. The law seems to be very vague here. In summary, this article was written as informational and certainly not advice, always be sure to check the legality of your sports betting before you partake.
